How to Remove a Watermark From a PDF
Watermarks are useful for drafts and internal documents, but they can look unprofessional on a final CV, proposal or report. If you’ve received a PDF with “DRAFT” or “SAMPLE” written across it, you might be wondering if you can safely remove it.
In this guide, you’ll learn when it’s appropriate to remove a watermark, plus a simple way to clean up your PDF using our Remove Watermark tool.
When is it OK to remove a watermark?
Before you remove anything, ask yourself:
- Do I own this document, or did someone give me permission to edit it?
- Is the watermark there only for draft/review purposes, or is it for copyright protection?
You should only remove watermarks from:
- Your own documents
- Documents a client or colleague has asked you to finalise
Avoid removing watermarks from ebooks, purchased templates or copyrighted materials you do not own.
How to remove a watermark using an online tool
Here’s the basic process using EasyPDF Studio:
- Open the Remove Watermark tool. Go to watermark.html on EasyPDF Studio.
- Upload your PDF. Drag and drop your file or click to select it.
- Start the removal process. Click the button to remove the visible watermark layer.
- Wait a few seconds. Larger files or scanned pages may take slightly longer.
- Download the cleaned PDF. Open it and scroll through to make sure the watermark has gone.
What if the PDF is a scanned document?
If the PDF is a scan (for example, a photo of a printed page), the watermark is part of the image itself. In that case:
- Try the Remove Watermark tool first – it may still be able to reduce it.
- If you have the original document, export a fresh PDF without the watermark.
- For small amounts of text, you can also convert the PDF to Word, edit the content, then save back as PDF. Use the Tools section on the homepage (index.html#tools) to find a converter.
How to avoid watermark issues in future
- When creating documents, only use watermarks while drafting, and remove them before export.
- Save a clean “final” PDF for your records.
- If you receive watermark-heavy drafts from clients, agree that final versions will be watermark-free.
