Frequently asked questions
What are the UK income tax rates for 2026/27?
The personal allowance is £12,570 (tax-free). Income from £12,571 to £50,270 is taxed at 20%, from £50,271 to £125,140 at 40%, and above £125,140 at 45%. These thresholds are frozen and unchanged from 2025/26.
How much National Insurance do employees pay in 2026/27?
Employees pay 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, and 2% on anything above £50,270 — the same rates as 2025/26.
Why does my personal allowance shrink above £100,000?
For every £2 you earn over £100,000, you lose £1 of personal allowance. It disappears entirely at £125,140, creating an effective 60% tax rate in that band. This calculator applies the taper automatically.
Does this include student loan repayments?
No — student loan plans vary by when and where you studied. As a guide, Plan 2 takes 9% of income above £28,470 (2026/27) on top of the figures shown here.
