To add 20% VAT, multiply the net price by 1.2. To remove VAT from a gross price, divide by 1.2 — the VAT element is the gross minus that result. For example, £120 including VAT is £100 net plus £20 VAT.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out VAT backwards from a total?

Divide the gross amount by 1.2 (for 20% VAT) to get the net. The difference is the VAT. £240 gross ÷ 1.2 = £200 net, so VAT is £40 — note it's not simply 20% of the gross.

What is the current UK VAT rate?

The standard rate is 20%. A reduced 5% rate applies to items like domestic fuel, and 0% applies to most food, books and children's clothes.

When must a business register for VAT?

Registration is compulsory once taxable turnover passes £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period. Below that, registration is voluntary.

Is VAT the same across the UK?

Yes — VAT rates are UK-wide, unlike income tax and property taxes which vary between nations.
